What is digital learning? Why is now the time to ensure more students have access to digital learning experiences? What can educators, leaders, and community members do to take action? How can teachers take their practice to a new level with digital technologies?

Technology has changed the way we do everything from grocery shopping, to listening to music, and reading books. It’s time to take action to leverage this potential with more innovative uses of technology in our nation's schools to ensure every student experiences personalized learning with great teaching. The technology and software available to educators is developing and improving rapidly, and the costs of technology are dropping. How can the nation make the most of this opportunity to close achievement gaps and ensure that all students are prepared for college and a career?

On December 9 the Alliance for Excellent Education held a webinar examining the digital learning imperative that faces schools today. The webinar featured Candice Dodson, director of e-Learning at the Indiana Department of Education; Bob Farrace, senior director for communications and development at the National Association of Secondary School Principals; Gilbert Trevino, Superintendent of Floydada school district near Lubbock, Texas; Emily Sheketoff, associate executive director of the American Library Association; and Bob Wise, president of the Alliance and former governor of West Virginia. The panelists spoke about digital learning and how it can benefit students; they also answered questions submitted by viewers across the country.

Also during the webinar, Gov. Wise provided an update on Digital Learning Day, which is scheduled for February 1, 2012. Digital Learning Day is the flagship event of the Alliance’s Center for Secondary School Digital Learning and Policy. Viewers learned more about the ways they can participate in this celebration of innovative teaching and learning.
