The Alliance for Excellent Education held a webinar to examine New Hampshire’s high school redesign, which included the introduction of competency-based learning as a means to determine student progress. Ultimately, teachers and school leaders claim responsibility for the close-in work of engineering personalized learning experiences that enable students to demonstrate mastery of rigorous content knowledge and higher-order skills.
The webinar featured the release of Strengthening High School Teaching and Learning in New Hampshire’s Competency-Based System, a new report from the Alliance that profiles how two high schools in New Hampshire made the shift from “seat time” to competency-based learning, which advances students when they have mastered course content.
Webinar panelists included Deputy Commissioner Paul Leather from the New Hampshire Department of Education; Principal Brian Stack from Sanborn Regional High School; and Erica Stofanak from Spaulding High School, who discussed local design and implementation of competency-based systems and personalized pathways and the impact on practice. Bob Wise, president of the Alliance and former governor of West Virginia, moderated the discussion.
