Forty-six states plus the District of Columbia, representing 87 percent of the U.S. student population, are in the process of implementing college- and career-ready standards in English language arts and mathematics. Their implementation for purposes of large-scale improvement underscores the premium of providing teachers with quality professional learning and ongoing support. However, few districts recognize that the quality of professional learning influences its capacity to be a significant part of an overall strategy for school improvement, educator effectiveness, and student achievement. The new expectations for student learning require education systems to equip all teachers—not just an exceptional few—with how the standards can be learned, taught, and assessed.
The Alliance for Excellent Education and Learning Forward held a webinar on July 31 to learn about Learning Forward’s partnership with Kentucky and New Hampshire to design a quality professional learning system that is essential to implementing new content standards. The panelists addressed the steps that states can take to create greater coherence between priority educational goals and professional development and share high-leverage strategies to improve and sustain quality teaching.
The webinar also included a question-and-answer period to address questions submitted by viewers from across the nation.
